Healthcare Resources and HRT for the Transgender Community in California

Hi Everyone,

This has become a very challenging time for  almost all Americans and especially for the LGBTQ+ community.  While we work to meet these challenges and support each other, it is important to make sure we take care of our own health.  We are updating our #WellnessWednesday posts to reflect sites that are still compassionately offering Transhealth services.  We are doing this work by states in alphabetical order

The good news for California is that California is a state that provides comprehensive gender-affirming care.  California law prohibits discrimination based on gender identity or expression.  The Transgender, Gender Diverse, and Intersex (TGI) Inclusive Care Act guarantees access to gender-affirming healthcare services.  Most health insurance plans in California cover gender-affirming care, including hormone therapy, surgery, and mental health services and Medicaid (Medi-Cal) and Medicare also provide coverage for gender-affirming care in California.

California is a sanctuary state for transgender youth, meaning it protects them from laws in other states that restrict their access to gender-affirming care.  Minor children in California can receive gender-affirming care with parental consent.

The California Department of Public Health provides information and resources on gender-affirming care: The California Dept. of Public Health (CDPH) LGBTQ Health.  The Trans Equality Project Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE) which was founded in 2024 as the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) and Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund (TLDEF)  has a list of California-based gender-affirming care providers on their A4TE Health Project webpage.  The California Attorney General’s Office protects the rights of transgender individuals to access gender-affirming care: Attorney General Bonta Issues Statement on President Trump’s Executive Order Seeking to End Youth Aceess to Gender Affirming Care.

While it’s nice to have a list of resources, in these posts we can also give  you a few details on what each of the organizations we post actually do.  We’ll conitnue to go through updating the posts by states alphabetically, unless you send us a note and request a particular state and we’ll move requests to the top of the list.

Some states have lots of resources and we’ll let you know as best we can where in the state the resources are located.  Other states don’t have as many resources.  So the number of states we post each week will vary.  Sometimes it will be a post about one or two states with lots of resources and sometimes it will be a post about several states with a few resources each.

This week we are looking at California.  California is blessed with an enormous number of resources for Transgender, Non-Binary, and Gender Non-Conforming care for adults, youth and children as well as  huge number of Planned Parenthood Health Care Centers.  While VA Clinics did provide care for LGBTQ persons, given the current political climate, we are no longer recommending these clinics as their close association with the federal govertment makes these an unknown to us.  Many resources across in California are, to their credit, creating  comfortable places for transitional medicine as well as routine proactive health maintenance and interventionary health care.  We will try to highlight what is offered in each case.

If you still can’t find the health care you need, drop us a note on FB (B.UR.SLF LLC), instagram/ twitter @burslfllc or email burslfllc@gmail.com and we will see what we can do to help.

This week we are covering resources for Californa.
