Healthcare Resources for the Transgender Community in Florida and Georgia

Hi Everyone,

This has become a very challenging time for almost all Americans and especially for the LGBTQ+ community.  While we work to meet these challenges and support each other it is import to make sure we take care of our own health.  We are updating our #WellnessWednesday posts to document sites that are still compassionately offering Transhealth services.  We are doing this work by states in alphabetical order.

This week we are covering Florida and Georgia resources for Transgender, Non-Binary, and Gender Non-Conforming Care.  These three states do have some legal provisions in place to protect transgender healthcare.

Florida is sadly still able to impose their cruel ban on life saving transgender healthcare for minors (ages < 18).  Many will remember that Florida SB 254 , passed in 2023, restricted gender-affirming care for minors and adults in the state. The bill, which was signed into law by Governor DeSantis, bared minors from receiving hormone treatments and surgeries, and restricted access to these treatments for adults. While initially enacted in 2023, this bill was later opposed in Doe v. Ladapo, which brought a preliminary injunction (2023) blocking SB 254 and then a permanent injunction (June 2024) against the law blocking the state from enforcing bans and restrictions on adult and minor health care in with the finding that Florida unlawfully targeted transgender people.  This challenge to the restrictive Florida law was brought by GLAD, NCLR, the Human Rights Campaign, Southern Legal Counsel, and Lowenstein Sandler.

Unfortunately in August 2024, the state brought an appeal to the 11th Circuit Court and this appellate court temporarily allowed the state ban in SB 254 to be enforced while the state appeals the lower court’s decision.  This means the bans and restrictions on health care for trans are currently in effect and so access to gender-affirming healthcare for transgender individuals in Florida is limited while the appeal proceeds.

Georgia Law SB 140 law prohibits irreversible procedures or therapies from being performed on minors for treatment of gender dysphoria, including sex reassignment surgeries or other surgeries to alter sexual characteristics, or hormone replacement therapy.

However, the good news if were were able to find many resources, more than our original post and that these resources are working to create  comfortable places for routine and proactive health maintenance as well as interventional health care.  We will try to highlight what is offered in each case.

If you still can’t find the health care you need, drop us a note on FB (B.UR.SLF LLC), instagram/ twitter @burslfllc or email burslfllc@gmail.com and we will see what we can do to help.
